About authors sitting alone, un-approached, un-approachable, ignored.
I’m determined to not make that my story.
Through May and June, I’m signing books at various Chapters bookstores in and around Ottawa.
For those not residing here, Chapters, with stores across the country, is Canada’s principal—most would say, only—large-scale book retailer.
Book signings.
Most authors don’t like ‘em, I’m told.
It’s too difficult, so they say, sitting there, in a chair, staring at patrons.
Who stare back.
And walk right by.
But that won’t be my fate.
I’ve been researching.
The faux and faux-pas of signings.
Some sample recommendations:
“Don’t just sit there looking like you’d rather be elsewhere.”
“Engage the store’s patrons, meet them, greet them, say something to them.”
“Bring something to give away.”
“Chocolate’s good.”
“No, chocolate’s not good.”
Hmm, there appear to be slight differences of opinion….
And so, if you’re in or around Ottawa, come visit, say hi.
See if I brought chocolate (or not).
Let’s talk it up,
At any of these stores.
